Is Desk really free and open source?
Yes. Desk is open source under the MIT license, and the software costs nothing. You can use it commercially, change it and host it wherever you like.
So what will I actually pay for?#
Three things, all outside Desk:
- Your server: Desk is small and runs on a 512 MB machine, so a few dollars a month is often enough.
- Your ModelRiver plan: the Free plan works. See Does Desk need a paid ModelRiver plan?
- AI tokens: billed by your AI provider, using your own key.
What does the MIT license allow?#
Use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute and even sell copies, for free. Keep the copyright and license notice in your copies. There's no warranty.
Where's the source code?#
On GitHub at github.com/modelriver/desk, with the full README and setup steps. A ready-made Docker image, ghcr.io/modelriver/desk, is published for amd64 and arm64.
Can I change how it works?#
Yes. Change anything in the code, or keep to configuration: branding, content, connectors and limits are all settings, so you can stay on the official releases and update easily.
How do I report a bug or ask for a feature?#
Open an issue on GitHub. For questions about your own setup, ask here in the chat.
